Reading 4 Life Teen Book Club

Curious to see what the current book club read is? August’s book for the Reading 4 Life Chester Main Teen Book Club is “The Whole Story of Half a Girl” by Veera Hiranandani. The Chester Main Teen Book Club is for 6th to 9th graders interested in joining a group of their peers in reading and discussing a book monthly. This book club meets on the 3th Thursday of each month. Next Meeting: Thursday, August 17, 2023 Summary: After her father loses his job, Sonia Nadhamuni, half Indian and half Jewish American, finds herself yanked out of private school and thrown into the unfamiliar world of public education. For the first time, Sonia’s mixed heritage makes her classmates ask questions—questions Sonia doesn’t always know how to answer—as she navigates between a group of popular girls who want her to try out for the cheerleading squad and other students who aren’t part of the “in” crowd. At the same time that Sonia is trying to make new friends, she’s dealing with what it means to have an out-of-work parent—it’s hard for her family to adjust to their changed circumstances. And then, one day, Sonia’s father goes missing. Now Sonia wonders if she ever really knew him. As she begins to look for answers, she must decide what really matters and who her true friends are—and whether her two halves, no matter how different, can make her a whole. Reading 4 Life Teen Book Club

Curious to see what the current book club read is? September’s book for the Reading 4 Life Chester Main Teen Book Club is “Tight” by Torrey Maldondo. The Chester Main Teen Book Club is for 6th to 9th graders interested in joining a group of their peers in reading and discussing a book monthly. This book club meets on the 3th Thursday of each month. Next Meeting: Thursday, September 21, 2023 Summary: Tight: Lately, Bryan’s been feeling it in all kinds of ways . . . Bryan knows what’s tight for him–reading comics, drawing superheroes, and hanging out with no drama. But drama is every day where he’s from, and that gets him tight, wound up. And now Bryan’s friend Mike pressures him with ideas of fun that are crazy risky. At first, it’s a rush following Mike, hopping turnstiles, subway surfing, and getting into all kinds of trouble. But Bryan never really feels right acting so wrong, and drama really isn’t him. So which way will he go, especially when his dad tells him it’s better to be hard and feared than liked? But if there’s one thing Bryan’s gotten from his comic heroes, it’s that he has power–to stand up for what he feels . . . Torrey Maldonado delivers a fast-paced, insightful, dynamic story capturing urban community life. Readers will connect with Bryan’s journey as he navigates a tough world with a heartfelt desire for a different life. Reading 4 Life Teen Book Club

Curious to see what the current book club read is? October’s book for the Reading 4 Life Chester Main Teen Book Club is “Amari and the Night Brothers” by B.B. Alston. The Chester Main Teen Book Club is for 6th to 9th graders interested in joining a group of their peers in reading and discussing a book monthly. This book club meets on a Thursday each month. Next Meeting: Thursday, October 12, 2023 Summary: Amari Peters has never stopped believing her missing brother, Quinton, is alive. Not even when the police told her otherwise, or when she got in trouble for standing up to bullies who said he was gone for good. So when she finds a ticking briefcase in his closet, containing a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain the secretive organization holds the key to locating Quinton–if only she can wrap her head around the idea of magicians, fairies, aliens, and other supernatural creatures all being real. Now she must compete for a spot against kids who’ve known about magic their whole lives. No matter how hard she tries, Amari can’t seem to escape their intense doubt and scrutiny–especially once her supernaturally enhanced talent is deemed “illegal.” With an evil magician threatening the supernatural world, and her own classmates thinking she’s an enemy, Amari has never felt more alone. But if she doesn’t stick it out and pass the tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton. If you are interested in joining the Chester Main Teen Book Club, please call 803-377-8145 for more information.
